AI Thread Summary
Completing a master's in mathematics often leads individuals to consider academia as a default career path, particularly the pursuit of tenure. However, the discussion emphasizes the importance of personal reflection on future goals. It encourages individuals to develop a clear five-year and ten-year plan, assessing how their advanced degree aligns with their aspirations. Without a defined plan, the conversation suggests creating one by contemplating personal values and legacy, such as what one would want to be remembered for if faced with limited time. This introspection is crucial for determining whether to pursue academia or explore alternative career options.

That depends- what do you want to do with your life? What is your 5-year plan and your 10-year plan? How did obtaining an advanced degree in Mathematics fit in with your plan?

If you have no plan, you should make one. What do you want to do with the next 5 years? If you knew you were going to die in 5 years, for what would you want to be remembered?

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
