What Could Be Wrong with My Shear Force Diagram?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the accuracy of a shear force diagram, specifically addressing potential errors in its construction or interpretation. Participants explore the validity of the diagram's points and the implications of discontinuities in the context of structural analysis.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents a shear force diagram with points at 0, -4, 1.25, 1.25, and back to 0, seeking clarification on its correctness.
  • Another participant expresses that the diagram appears correct and does not identify any issues with it.
  • A third participant suggests that the problem may lie in the input method rather than the diagram itself, indicating a need for re-evaluation.
  • A later reply introduces the idea that an additional line of discontinuity at 12 meters is necessary, which one participant finds unnecessary.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no consensus on the correctness of the shear force diagram. Some participants believe it is correct, while others suggest modifications are needed, indicating ongoing disagreement.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights potential limitations in understanding the requirements for shear force diagrams, including the need for discontinuities that may not be immediately apparent.

I have drawn the following shear force diagram however it says it is wrong. Could somebody please explain to me what is wrong with it. The points in the diagram are 0 then -4 then 1.25 then 1.25, then back to 0.

Looks good to me, I don't see anything wrong with it.

thanks, that is what i thought. It must be the way i have entered it in or something, i am going to try it again

it turns out there had to be another line of discontinuity (blue line) at 12 metres which seems rather pointless
