Yesterday is the first time I heard that there where three WTC buildings, not two that was destroyed. How/Why did the WTC 7 go down?

It was severly damaged in the collapse of the twin towers. There is a wiki artical.
 
WTC 7 collapsed due to fire and damage from the collapse of the north tower. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_World_Trade_Center

Since this topic quickly leads to conspiracy theory and the nutcases will invariably come out of the woodwork at seeing this, it is a banned topic.
