What Insights Can Gamma Photon Distribution in the Galaxy Provide?

How many gamma photons are in the galaxy,
and what can we know about the distribution?
Which kind of process can absorb them?

IIRC, there's been some recent work on mapping cold, dark clouds by studying their wide borders' soft x-ray emissions where particles are excited by cosmic rays...
