What is a Good Book for Self-Studying Number Theory?

AI Thread Summary
For self-study in number theory, "Elementary Number Theory" by Jones and Jones is recommended as a solid choice. Another highly regarded book is "An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers" by Niven et al., which offers hints and answers for selected problems, although a solutions manual may not be available. The book includes challenging starred problems, with some considered among the hardest in international math competitions, providing an excellent opportunity for those seeking a rigorous challenge.

I've never studied the number theory before, and its not something I can study as an elective. What good book could I use for self study?

I'll second this book. Hints and answers are given only for selected problems. I'm not sure if there is a solutions manual available but it could be very helpful. The starred problems are very difficult (I think the last problem in the divisibility section of chapter 1 is considered one of the hardest international math olympiad problems) so try them if you want a real challenge.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
