AI Thread Summary
The momentum of a 75 kg freshman moving southward at 3 m/s is calculated using the formula momentum = mass x velocity. This results in a momentum of 225 kg•m/s. There was a discussion about the correct units for momentum, which should be kg•m/s rather than just "Units." Despite the unit error, the professor accepted the answer as correct. The conversation highlights the importance of using proper units in physics calculations.

I see what you mean. I believe kg•m/s is the proper unit for momentum. Regardless, I submitted the answer as 225 Units, and the professor counted it correct. lol

Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
