AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a physics major in their final year contemplating two options for course scheduling. Option A involves taking calculus three during the next semester at their home institution and enrolling in a computer science course at a community college over the summer. Option B suggests taking calculus three during the summer and Theory of Probability in the following semester. Participants emphasize the importance of completing calculus three promptly, especially if the student plans to take upper-level courses like Electricity and Magnetism (E&M). There is a consensus that summer is better spent gaining real-world experience through full-time work rather than taking scientific courses, particularly if the summer session is not extensive. The advice leans towards avoiding scientific courses during the summer unless the session is significantly long, suggesting that the student should focus on non-scientific studies or work experience instead.

Physics major. Last year. Should I
A. Take calculus three during he next semester AT MY home institution and take computer science during this summer at a community college.
Or
B. Take calculus 3 this summer and take Theory of Probabilty next semester at my home institution.

Let hear some opinions and advice.

One might wonder how you managed to get into the final year of a physics degree without taking a complete sequence of calculus. Maybe I'm not understanding something. Anyway your situation is what it is. I would aim to get the calculus 3 course done as soon as you can if you're intending on taking an upper year E&M course.

That's assuming you have time over the summer to do such a thing. Generally I think it's best in most cases for students to be working full time over the summer if they can. It builds up real world skills and give you some life experience that can be really helpful once school is over.

Take no scientific courses during the summer, unless your summer session is 18 weeks in length. Choose something to study without enrolling in it during the summer.

When you say scientific do you mean the computer science or he calculus?

I mean SCIENTIFIC, including any real natural or physical science courses, engineering courses, computer science, Mathematics courses.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
