Why do some substances absorb EMR more than others?

Some are closer to black bodies than others, some reflect more than others, why is this?

There's a ton of reasons why, but it comes down mainly to:

Material (specifically EM properties, more specifically EM properties relative to the medium its in)
Surface Finish
Geometry

So I know that electrons are fundamental, there's no 'material' that makes them up, it's like talking about a colour itself rather than a car or a flower. Now protons and neutrons and quarks and whatever other stuff is there fundamentally, I want someone to kind of teach me these, I have a lot of questions that books might not give the answer in the way I understand. Thread 'Fundamental Probability'

If the universe is fundamentally probabilistic, and all possible outcomes are realized in some branch of the multiverse, does that invalidate the concept of scientific inquiry? If knowledge is merely a description of one particular branch of reality, does it have any inherent value?
