AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the factors influencing the vibrancy of autumn leaf colors, specifically the impact of sunny days and cool nights. It is noted that these conditions promote the production of anthocyanins, pigments responsible for the bright reds and purples in leaves, while also allowing for the breakdown of chlorophyll, which reveals other colors. The combination of warm days and cool nights creates optimal conditions for these processes, leading to more dramatic and vivid autumn foliage. Participants have observed that this year's colors are particularly spectacular due to these favorable weather conditions.

With the leaves starting to change I have been wondering what causes the more dramatic colors verses the more dull leaf colors. I have been told that sunny days and cool nights is the best environment for good autumn colors. If this is true, why does that create the nice colors?

Thanks!

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
