My home PC is a stand alone machine, do i need windows 2003 ?
The discussion centers on the delayed release of Windows Longhorn until the end of 2004, with users expressing their preferences for different Windows versions. Windows XP is favored for home use due to its user-friendliness and security updates, while Windows 2003 is deemed unnecessary for standalone home PCs. Participants recommend using Norton Firewall for enhanced security, especially for always-on connections, while also noting the built-in firewall in Windows XP. The conversation highlights the importance of security measures and the evolution of Windows operating systems.
PREREQUISITESThis discussion is beneficial for home users considering operating system options, IT professionals evaluating security measures, and anyone interested in the evolution of Windows operating systems.
And if you use a router with your dsl or cable, you also don't need a software firewall. The router is a good hardware firewall.Originally posted by Considering
I wouldn't worry about a firewall software unless you are using an always-on connection (cable, dsl, etc).

Buy Norton firewall if you want to upgrade the software on your PC. It will tell you whenever someone is making a hack attempt on your computer, lots of MS security humor could come from that, especially as the attempts start to decrease over the first few weeks you have the firewall installed.
Of course you do, silly.Do I need Windows 2003 ?
Just to keep you in suspence? Why Longhorn has to be so late till end of 2004 ?
