My home PC is a stand alone machine, do i need windows 2003 ?
The discussion revolves around the delayed release of Windows Longhorn until the end of 2004, with participants exploring the implications of this delay and discussing various Windows operating systems, including Windows 2003 and Windows XP. The conversation touches on user preferences, security concerns, and the general state of Windows operating systems during that time.
Participants do not reach a consensus on the necessity of Windows 2003 for home users, and there are differing opinions on the effectiveness of firewalls and the implications of the Longhorn delay. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best operating system choice for different user needs.
Some statements reflect personal experiences and opinions rather than established facts, and there is a lack of clarity on the specific reasons behind the Longhorn delay. The discussion also includes varying assumptions about user needs and security practices.
And if you use a router with your dsl or cable, you also don't need a software firewall. The router is a good hardware firewall.Originally posted by Considering
I wouldn't worry about a firewall software unless you are using an always-on connection (cable, dsl, etc).

Buy Norton firewall if you want to upgrade the software on your PC. It will tell you whenever someone is making a hack attempt on your computer, lots of MS security humor could come from that, especially as the attempts start to decrease over the first few weeks you have the firewall installed.
Of course you do, silly.Do I need Windows 2003 ?
Just to keep you in suspence? Why Longhorn has to be so late till end of 2004 ?
