Will Having a Free Period Impact My University Application?

AI Thread Summary
Having a free period in high school is generally not viewed negatively by universities, especially if students maintain a full course load and complete all required credits. Admissions committees primarily review transcripts rather than individual schedules, meaning they are unlikely to notice a free period unless it results in taking fewer courses overall. Many students with free periods have successfully gained admission to reputable universities and received scholarships, indicating that the presence of a free period does not adversely affect college applications. Additionally, the variability in high school schedules means that a free period may not impact a student's competitiveness compared to peers without one.

Last year I completed two courses in the space of one, so this year I may have the possibility of having a free period. I was just wondering if having a free period looks bad to universities even if I have all my credits.

Universities see your transcript, not your schedule. They won't even know you have a free period unless you take less than a full load, in which it could conceivably look bad, but if you're still taking plenty of challenging courses I can't imagine them caring very much.

I seriously doubt that a university would care if you had a free period. Like Stephan hoyer said, the university probably won't know if you had a free period. I know a lot of students who had free periods in my senior class in high school who not only got into good schools but got good scholarships.

...on top of that, each high school is so different that your schedule (with the free period) might be the same schedule (or better) of someone else without a free period.

Cool. Thank you all.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
