Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the perception of color in window blinds depending on whether a window is open or closed. Participants explore the factors influencing color perception, particularly in relation to the properties of glass and light filtering.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Richard observes a change in the perceived color of the blinds from light brownish to a dark greenish hue when the window is closed, prompting confusion about the cause.
  • One participant suggests that the glass filters certain wavelengths of light, potentially affecting color perception.
  • Another participant mentions that regular glass contains iron, which can impart a green tint, and notes that low iron glass, such as Optiwhite, is available and used in specific applications.
  • Links to external resources are provided to support the claims about the green tint in glass.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple viewpoints regarding the influence of glass on color perception, but there is no consensus on the exact reasons for the observed color change.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address specific assumptions about lighting conditions or the exact nature of the glass used in the window, which may affect the conclusions drawn.

Hello,

I am a bit confused regarding something I have observed on the blinds in front of my windows. The "real" colour is a sort of a light brownish colour (NCS S 4010 Y50R to be precise - see http://ncscolour.com/product/s-4010-y50r/).

However, when the window in front of it is closed, the colour you perceive from the inside of the house is a sort of a slightly dark greenish one. On the attached image you can see the blinds with the window-door open (right) and closed (left).

This is a bit confusing, I have no idea why the colour changes. There door is triple-glass.

Any ideas ??

Best regards

Richard

The glass filters some wavelengths more than others.

I believe regular glass contains iron which gives glass a green tint. Sometimes the edges of glass are obviously green. You can get low iron glass of which Optiwhite (Spelling?) Is one brand available in the UK. It's used for things like frameless showers.

Thanks for your replies. Regards
