The word wasn't in my old American Heritage dictionary. I had to fall back on the scrabble dictionary.

Well, I guess that could be worse. Then again with the braintrust amassed on here (and I'm not counting myself) one would expect PF to do better. Ah well, just goes to show that not all forms of intelligentsia are the same.

EDIT2: Oh wait... I havent solved todays puzzle! I could bring the average up (or sink us all so low viXra would laugh at us. Should I try? I can always claim I "didn't have the time".

So did you know what the solution word meant? Ed says he had to go through 2 dictionaries, and I'm 99.99% certain I've never used the word in a sentence in my entire life. (I searched my FB account, opened in 2008, and found no evidence of the word.)
In any event, good job!
