The work done by a conservative force on a closed curve is zero but why it isn't true for the non conservative force?

Suppose you have a block sitting on a table, and there is friction between the block and the table. You push the block in one direction for a while against the frictional force, and then you push the block in the opposite direction against the frictional force until the block is back to its original location. Is the amount of work you did zero?
