In summary, the conversation is discussing the reactions that occur when ammonia (NH3) is mixed with copper sulfate (CuSO4) and when sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is mixed with copper tetraammine (Cu(NH3)4+2). The attempt at a solution involves treating ammonia and sulfuric acid as Group 1 metals and utilizing single and double replacement reactions. The conversation also touches on the pH of ammonia solutions, the solubility of copper hydroxide, the formation of ammonia copper complexes, and the behavior of ammonia in strong acid solutions. Additional resources, such as titrations.info, chemistry-quizzes.info, and ph-meter.info, are mentioned for further information.

Homework Statement

What is produced when NH3 is mixed with CuSO4(aq)?

What is produced when H2SO4(aq) is mixed with Cu(NH3)4+2?

Homework Equations

None

The Attempt at a Solution

For the first one, I'm thinking I should treat ammonia as a Group 1 metal and do a single replacement, but I'm not sure how this would work out.

For the second one, I have no clue how to start. Would the hydrogen pair up with the copper?

Thanks in advance for the help.

For the first you are right.
Same of the second you treat SO4 and NH3 group 1 and do a double replacement

This is b/c they are polyatomic ions

Wrong.

What is pH of ammonia solution?

What do you know of copper hydroxide solubility?

What do you know about ammonia copper complex?

What happens to ammonia in the solution of strong acids?

see when I looked at it, it just seemed to be a balancing sort of problem, like you get in grade school, just to teach you how to do it. Usually you ignore those sort of things for those problems.

But if it is more advanced then you should def look at what he said

When NH3 is mixed with CuSO4(aq), a double displacement reaction occurs. The ammonia acts as a base and reacts with the copper ions in the CuSO4 solution, forming a new compound called copper(II) hydroxide (Cu(OH)2) and ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4. The overall reaction can be represented as follows:

2NH3 + CuSO4 → Cu(OH)2 + (NH4)2SO4

When H2SO4(aq) is mixed with Cu(NH3)4+2, a similar double displacement reaction occurs. The sulfuric acid acts as an acid and reacts with the ammonia complex ion, forming a new compound called copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4) and ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4. The overall reaction can be represented as follows:

H2SO4 + Cu(NH3)4+2 → CuSO4 + (NH4)2SO4 + 2H2O

In both reactions, the products formed are a salt (Cu(OH)2 or CuSO4) and an ammonium salt (NH4)2SO4.

1. What is the chemical equation for the reaction between NH3 and CuSO4?

The chemical equation for this reaction is NH3 + CuSO4 → (NH4)2SO4 + Cu. This reaction results in the formation of ammonium sulfate and copper.

2. What is the role of H2SO4 in the reaction between NH3 and CuSO4?

H2SO4, also known as sulfuric acid, acts as a catalyst in this reaction. It helps to speed up the reaction between NH3 and CuSO4, resulting in the formation of (NH4)2SO4 and Cu.

3. What is the product of the reaction between NH3 and CuSO4?

The products of this reaction are (NH4)2SO4 and Cu. (NH4)2SO4 is an ionic compound known as ammonium sulfate, while Cu is the chemical symbol for copper.

4. What is the role of CuSO4 in the reaction between NH3 and H2SO4?

CuSO4, also known as copper sulfate, acts as a reactant in this reaction. It reacts with NH3 and H2SO4 to form (NH4)2SO4 and Cu(NH3)4+2.

5. What is the significance of Cu(NH3)4+2 in this reaction?

Cu(NH3)4+2, also known as tetraamminecopper(II) ion, is the complex ion formed during this reaction. It is a stable and soluble complex that helps to increase the yield of the reaction and stabilize the products.
