AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on identifying various kinematic models for a school project. Participants analyze attached images, suggesting possible identifications such as a steam piston, a two-stage compressor, and a reversing rack and pinion system. There is uncertainty about some models, with suggestions that one might be for cutting helical grooves and another possibly serving as a right-angle transmission. The conversation emphasizes the need for additional images to clarify the models' functions. Overall, the group collaborates to enhance understanding of the collection's mechanical components.

Hey guy,

I'm working at my school to ID our collection of kinematic models and make signs for explaining them. I have them almost done, but there are a few I can't find in any of the books, can you guys take a look at the attached and linked pictures and see if you can ID them?

  1. Not sure, might be able to tell more with a picture of the other side. It involves a lot of mechanical advantage whatever it is.
  2. Hard to say, could be some sort of idler or differential? Where's the other half?
  3. Looks like a steam piston to me, could have been used for any number of things.
  4. Same as above.
  5. I want to say steam piston as well, but the second smaller piston makes me think it's a 2-stage compressor...

For the attached thinmbnails:

  1. Looks like a reversing rack and pinion system. As the pinion spins around it moves the bar to one side, and then back. Kind of an interesting design.
  2. I guess this is the other side of the piece I was asking for another picture of. Looking at it, I'm not sure what it is... seems like it might be for cutting a helical groove in a circular plate?
  3. Seems like some kind of large industrial right-angle transmission. What its for is anyone's guess...

Thread 'Turbocharging carbureted petrol 2 stroke engines'
Hi everyone, online I ve seen some images about 2 stroke carbureted turbo (motorcycle derivation engine). Now.. In the past in this forum some members spoke about turbocharging 2 stroke but not in sufficient detail. The intake and the exhaust are open at the same time and there are no valves like a 4 stroke. But if you search online you can find carbureted 2stroke turbo sled or the Am6 turbo. The question is: Is really possible turbocharge a 2 stroke carburated(NOT EFI)petrol engine and...
I need some assistance with calculating hp requirements for moving a load. - The 4000lb load is resting on ball bearing rails so friction is effectively zero and will be covered by my added power contingencies. Load: 4000lbs Distance to travel: 10 meters. Time to Travel: 7.5 seconds Need to accelerate the load from a stop to a nominal speed then decelerate coming to a stop. My power delivery method will be a gearmotor driving a gear rack. - I suspect the pinion gear to be about 3-4in in...
