Aftershock of Nevada Earthquake Felt in California

AI Thread Summary
A 6.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tonopah, Nevada, waking residents as far as 150 miles away. This event was recorded alongside a separate 5.8 magnitude earthquake from the Tonga region, which happened a few hours later. Experts clarify that there is no connection between the two earthquakes, despite potential misconceptions among non-scientists. The discussion highlights the prevalence of misinformation on social media and Q&A platforms, where individuals may incorrectly link unrelated seismic events without scientific backing.

Yes, I recorded this one, not a spectacular amplitude because of the distance

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nn00725272/executive <--- the 6.5

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us70009gsj/executive <--- The 5.8

there's 2 events a few hours apart on the trace
Firstly, the Mw 6.5, Nevada, then a Mw 5.8 from the Tonga region ( South Pacific)

Obvious question - the Tonga event is there because it is on/in the same recording medium close to the same time. No connection.

Do you think non-scientists are going to "derive" some baloney connection without an informed comment
on the expert's part? Or I have just seen too many weirdo comments?

Thread 'The Secrets of Prof. Verschure's Rosetta Stones'
(Edit: since the thread title was changed, this first sentence is too cryptic: the original title referred to a Tool song....) Besides being a favorite song by a favorite band, the thread title is a straightforward play on words. This summer, as a present to myself for being promoted, I purchased a collection of thin sections that I believe comprise the research materials of Prof. Rob Verschure, who at the time was faculty in the Geological Institute in Amsterdam. What changed this...
These last days, there is a seemingly endless cluster of rather powerful earthquakes close to the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios. Remember, this is a highly volcanically active region, Santorini especially being famous for the supervolcanic eruption which is conjectured to have led to the decline of the Minoan civilization: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_eruption To grasp the scale of what is happening, between the 26th of January and the 9th of February, 12000...
