AI Thread Summary
Arnold Sommerfeld's textbooks on theoretical physics were once considered essential for understanding the universe, but their availability in print has diminished. The discussion highlights the enduring reputation of Sommerfeld as a pivotal figure in mathematical physics, with some participants expressing nostalgia for his work. There is a suggestion that his books could be revived, as they are still highly regarded in academic circles. However, it is noted that only a few volumes are currently accessible, while the complete series consists of six or more. The conversation reflects a desire to reconnect with these foundational texts in physics.

Recently I was reminded of a series of textbooks by Arnold Sommerfeld. When I was a young man, these were obligatory offerings at any respectable bookstore. I never purchased them because I had other things on my plate. Now I cannot seem to find them in print.

I did find this assessment of these books:

http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Administrivia/booklist.html

"Arnold Sommerfeld: Lectures on Theoretical Physics
Sommerfeld is God for mathematical physics. "

I always assumed that Sommerfeld's books were required reading for anybody who is anybody in understanding (the) Universe. Can these books be resurrected?
