Schools Are There Pre-College Physics Internships Available?

AI Thread Summary
Finding physics-related internships for college students can be challenging, as many programs have limited spots and prioritize undergraduate applicants over high school students. Liability concerns regarding minors in laboratory settings further complicate the availability of such opportunities. Notable programs like those at MIT and NASA cater to high school students, but application deadlines typically fall in the fall or by February, making it difficult to secure a position for the summer. It is advisable to reach out to the college for potential options, although these may not qualify as traditional internships.

Hi, I'm going to be attending college in fall, majoring in physics. I was looking for physics-related internship opportunities over the summer. If anybody knows any good programs out there, or can give me some advice on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

There are very, very few of them.

First, these programs can't take all of the undergraduates who apply, so why make the problem worse by opening them up to high school students? Second, the liability issues of having an under-18 year old in the lab make this very, very difficult to do.

MIT has a great program for high school students (as does NASA), but I'm sure the deadlines have passed; most internships require applying in the fall, or by Feb at the latest. Have you tried contacting the school you'll be attending to ask if they have any options for you?

Those programs, though, aren't really internships. (Although they are great ways to spend a few weeks in the summer)

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
