Banking Summer Internship for Maths Student

AI Thread Summary
A maths student entering their third year is seeking guidance on securing a banking internship, particularly at Morgan Stanley. They express confusion over the various banking sectors, especially regarding the technology option and concerns about being placed in back office roles. The discussion highlights that for maths students with programming skills, front office roles such as Quantitative Analysis (QA) internships are preferable, with recommendations for Investment Banking Division (IBD) or "Strats and Modeling" positions. There is skepticism about equity research due to its perceived lack of a competitive edge. The student seeks clarification on the requirements for the "Strats and Modeling" role, questioning whether summer analyst positions are available to undergraduates, and confirms that IBD stands for Investment Banking Division.

I'm a maths student going into 3rd year. I was told to start early looking into a banking internship for next summer. The problem is I'm really confused by all the different sectors of the banks. Taking Morgan Stanley for example http://www.morganstanley.com/about/careers/programs/summeranalyst.html . The technology option looks like it might be suitable but I've heard lots of people saying you might want avoid being stuck in the back office. There are so many different areas and I'm wondering which one I as a maths student with programming experience would be suited too? Thanks

I'm on the buy side rather than the sell side, so my advice is limited, but I don't believe there's a lot of creative quantitative work to be done at BBBs for math interns. I'd just go for any front office QA internship. Edit: Looking at the list, I'd go with either IBD or "Strats and Modeling" (never noticed MS had such a department). Possibly fixed income. I'm rather reserved about 'equity research' because that's an area where I feel intelligence is the least of an edge, even though the phrase includes the word 'research'. Ask around WSO.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a bit confused about the strats and modelling option http://www.morganstanley.com/about/careers/pdf/SA_SM_QF_NA.pdf. At the bottom under requirements it says "A Bachelor’s degree with expertise in Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Quantitative Finance or Computer Science." It then however refers to the applicants as students. Does that mean the summer analyst positions are not open to undergraduate students? When you say IBD I assume the IB is investment banking but what does the D stand for? Thanks again

:) Investment banking division.

I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
