AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on finding affordable or free software for creating professional diagrams for lab reports, particularly for optical systems. The original poster currently uses Paint and is seeking alternatives. Suggestions include Microsoft Visio, which may be available for free to students through a Dreamspark account, although there are issues accessing the purchase page on Microsoft's site. The need for effective diagramming tools is emphasized, especially for accurately representing scientific concepts in reports.

I wasn't sure which section to post this, I was going to put this in learning materials:
https://www.physicsforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=151

But it says I cannot post there...anyway,

Are there any good programs, preferably free or inexpensive, that are useful for drawing professional looking diagrams for lab reports typed in word? Paint is really the only tool I have at the moment, for circuits I know of a site called circuit lab, but at the moment I am typing up a lab report on an analysis of an optical system and it I am going to need to be able to make diagrams to define all the points, distances, planes etc. with symbols. I have no idea what physicist typically use, so any suggestions would be appreciated...

thanks..

Visio, if you're a student you should be able to get a free copy.

I tried to google it, but the website I find: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/v...op-features-diagram-software-FX103796044.aspx

...does not seem to work when I click "buy now," it can't load the page. I didn't see anything about a student copies either, I thought maybe it would be an option when I clicked "by now." Hopefully microsoft will fix their site.

You have to have a dreamspark account to download it free, google dreamspark.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
This is part 2 of my thread Collection of Free Online Math Books and Lecture Notes Here, we will consider physics and mathematical methods for physics resources. Now, this is a work in progress. Please feel free comment regarding items you want to be included, or if a link is broken etc. Note: I will not post links to other collections, each link will point you to a single item. :book:📚📒 [FONT=trebuchet ms]Introductory college/university physics College Physics, Openstax...
