AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around a nostalgic game where players travel from east to west across the USA in a horse and cart during historical times. Players manage resources like coins, repair broken wheels, and address illnesses among party members, with the risk of losing them if not treated. Key gameplay elements include crossing rivers and camping, with the ultimate goal of reaching the destination with as many original party members as possible. The game in question is identified as "Oregon Trail," with a participant recalling a similar game called "Westward Ho." There is also mention of the game's availability on a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk for an old Commodore computer.

There is this game (well, use to be) where you'd have yourself and possibly others go from the east to west of the USA on a horse and cart back in the old times, and you'd be given some coins and stuff. You'd need to repair broken wheels, get medicine if someone was ill (or you'd just leave them and they would usually die), cross rivers, camp for the night (or a few days) if you needed to cross a river but it was too deep at the time (or you could cross it and risk everything you had).

You had to make it to the end with as many as people you started out with, and if everyone died before then you lost.

I can't remember the name of this game! Can anyone recall what it is called?

Oregon Trail perhaps?!

Yes! THANK YOU! That's it. :D

I was thinking of Westward Ho. I bet if I dig deep enough I can come up with this old game on a 5 1/4 inch floppy for an old Commodore. And yes, I could probably come up with the machine it runs on as well as the disk drive.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
