AI Thread Summary
When seeking chemical vendors in the US, several options beyond the well-known names like Sigma, Fisher, and Acros are recommended. EMD is noted for its alcohol products, while VWR offers a range that includes Merck and JT Baker. Sigma Aldrich also encompasses Fluka and Reidel de Haan. For specialized needs, STREM Chemicals is highlighted for catalysts and ligands, offering custom manufacturing. Additional vendors mentioned include Lancaster and Alfa Aesar, which are recognized for their quality and pricing. The choice of vendor often depends on specific chemical requirements and desired quality.

I am in charge of purchasing chemicals for my department in the university and I was wondering if anybody knows any good chemical vendors in the US. I know the basic ones like Sigma, Fisher, Acros, Brandnu, Spectrum, JTBaker, and GFS, but I was wondering if there are other places that have decent pricing and quality for chemicals. Thank you in advance.

It really depends on what you need. For example , I order Alcohol from EMD. Some vendors are better than others with the quality of the chemicals and the relative pricing.

VWR (also covers Merck, JT Baker & EMD range)
Fisher (also covers Acros)
Sigma Aldrich (also covers Fluka, Reidel de Haan)

For catalysts and ligands nothing beats STREM chemicals. They will also custom make stuff for you.

I also order a lot of stuff from Lancaster and Alfa Aesar.

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
I'm trying to find a cheap DIY method to etch holes of various shapes through 0.3mm Aluminium sheet using 5-10% Sodium Hydroxide. The idea is to apply a resist to the Aluminium then selectively ablate it off using a diode laser cutter and then dissolve away the Aluminium using Sodium Hydroxide. By cheap I mean resists costing say £20 in small quantities. The Internet has suggested various resists to try including... Enamel paint (only survived seconds in the NaOH!) Acrylic paint (only...
