Combination of spherical lenses

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on the optical properties of two thin lenses with focal lengths of +15 cm (converging) and -15 cm (diverging) positioned 60 cm apart, with an object (a bird) located 25 cm in front of the converging lens. The image of the bird is described as virtual, upright, and magnified. Additionally, if the bird's height is 10 cm, the height of its image is calculated to be greater than 10 cm due to magnification. Another scenario involves a diverging lens and a converging lens, where the object placed at x = -12 cm results in a virtual image. The discussion emphasizes the importance of lens combinations in determining image characteristics.

Two thin lenses having focal lengths of +15 cm and -15 cm are positioned 60 cm apart. A bird stands 25 cm in front of of the converging lens.

a. describe the image of the bird. Is it real or virtual? Upright or inverted? Magnified or reduced?

b. If the bird is 10 cm in height, what is the height of its image?

Combination of lenses (Convex & Concave)

Two lenses are placed on the x-axis of a line. The first lens is a diverging lens with a focal length of 9 cm placed x= -8 cm. The second lens is a converging lens with focal length 4 cm placed x= 6 cm. If an object is placed at x= -12 cm, what is the position of the image, image type (virtual or real), and the magnification of the image?

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
