Comparing Impulse in Collisions: Which Ball Experiences a Greater Magnitude?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

In the discussion regarding the impulse experienced by two equal mass balls (red and blue) dropped from the same height, the consensus is that both balls experience the same magnitude of impulse during their collision with the floor. This conclusion is based on the principle of conservation of momentum and the impulse-momentum theorem, which states that impulse equals the change in momentum. Since both balls have equal mass and are dropped from the same height, they undergo identical changes in momentum upon rebounding.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of impulse-momentum theorem
  • Knowledge of conservation of momentum
  • Familiarity with basic physics concepts of mass and height
  • Ability to apply equations related to impulse and momentum
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the impulse-momentum theorem in detail
  • Explore examples of momentum conservation in elastic and inelastic collisions
  • Learn about the factors affecting rebound height in collisions
  • Investigate real-world applications of impulse in sports physics
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of impulse and momentum in collisions.

Homework Statement

2 equal mass balls (one red one blue) are dropped from the same height and rebound off the floor. the red ball rebounds to a higher position. which ball is subjected to the greater magnitude of impulse during its collision with the floor?

a. it's impossible to tell since time intervals and forces are unknown.
b. both balls were subjected to the same3 magnitude impulse.
c. blue
d. red

Homework Equations

impulse = f*deltat

The Attempt at a Solution

i think the answer is b, but I'm not sure

kallisti, welcome to PF! What's the equation that relates impulse to momentum?

impulse equals change in momentum.

so are they the same, since momentum is conserved?
