Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the comparative quality of cover songs versus their original versions. Participants explore which covers are considered better or worse, including both singles and album tracks, and express personal opinions on various songs and their interpretations.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that the quality of a cover depends on personal judgment and taste, while others argue for an independent standard of "better."
  • Several examples of covers and originals are presented, with participants expressing preferences and discussing the emotional impact of different versions.
  • There are claims that some covers add new interpretations or arrangements, while others feel certain covers do not justify their existence compared to the originals.
  • Participants mention specific songs and artists, such as "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash, and "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles, highlighting varying opinions on their respective covers.
  • Some participants express a desire for arguments or reasoning behind preferences, while others emphasize the subjective nature of musical appreciation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally do not reach consensus on the criteria for evaluating covers versus originals. Multiple competing views remain regarding the subjective nature of musical quality and the validity of personal taste in judgments.

Contextual Notes

Discussions include references to specific songs and artists without resolving the subjective interpretations or emotional responses elicited by different versions. The conversation reflects a range of personal experiences and preferences, which may not align universally.

Who May Find This Useful

Music enthusiasts, fans of specific artists, and those interested in the dynamics of musical interpretation and cover songs may find this discussion engaging.

SIde note, followed by a cover of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enter_Sandman (1991)

I just stumbled upon a very recent video of
"The Warning" ( https://www.thewarningband.com/ - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warning_(band) )
(whose covers of "Crazy Train" and "Back in Black" were posted by me).
The link to this new video follows my quoted covers...

Maybe because in many cases the only people who like the song posted are the posters of that particular song.

No. I was surprised by NJ in the joke and wondered what Manfred Mann's Earth Band - the only version I knew - had to do with it. Then I found out that this version was actually a cover and the composer was the boss, born in NJ.

Below is Asterism's cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Scuttle Buttin' (start at 1m10s):

(I like Asterism. In this video, the guitarist (Hal-Ca) is 16 and the bassist (Miyu) is 17.)

The original. Just about everybody in Japan knows this song as it was the theme of possibly the most popular anime ever. Even Robin Williams was a fan.

Musical popularity revolves around NHK TV theme songs. That's the key to filling arenas.

There must be hundreds of covers of this, notably by the Glory Gospel Singers of Georgia, USA. Here's Tokyo Brass Style.

Rebecca Lovell playing her original instrument, the mandolin. Wonderful touch. Every note has its own individual loudness. But you'll never get rich playing the mandolin. Meanwhile sister Megan demonstrates the Zoot Horn Rollo long lunar floating note.

Not sure this is necessarily better than the original, but it's kind of cute - Curt Smith and his daughter covering Tears for Fears' "Mad World" (which I believe is itself a cover of Gary Jules).

The little bits of dad-and-daughter byplay at beginning and end add something to it somehow.

For harmony you can't beat family. His fingers appear huge. It appears he wrote the song and Jules got the hit.

The original version is from Tears for Fears; the original singer is Curt Smith; Gary Jules - which I prefer - is a cover.
