Music Cover songs versus the original track, which ones are better?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the merits of cover songs compared to their originals, exploring which covers are considered better and which should have been avoided. The subjective nature of evaluating music is emphasized, with opinions varying widely based on personal taste. Notable examples include Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower," which many argue surpasses Bob Dylan's original, and Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt," which evokes deep emotion. Other covers, such as those by Eva Cassidy and the Bare Naked Ladies, are praised for their unique interpretations that enhance the originals. Conversely, some covers are criticized for lacking originality or failing to add anything new, with specific songs mentioned as examples of covers that should have been left alone. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of musical interpretation, the role of the listener in evaluating art, and the complexities of genre classification, particularly in jazz. Overall, the thread highlights the rich landscape of music covers, showcasing both celebrated interpretations and those deemed unnecessary.

What a gas. They made so much out of what could have been a boring scene. And the Dixieland version is really cool.

The tune is familiar but I would have thought it was Tchaikovsky or Bizet.

I dont think the original does it a lot of justice. However the live version by mark is phenomenal.

In the exact covers category,

Ramble On (Led Zeppelin) | Lexington Lab Band

I figure this was where the double lead guitar thing was invented. George Harrison did it first on Your Bird Can Sing but in a way that didn't catch on.

One day in the Ann Arbor of 1970 a friend who worked at The Canterbury House almost begged me to come hear a band called Little Feat. I went mostly to see ebassist Roy Estrada whom I recognized from the Mothers of Invention. There were but three people in the audience, of whom I was one. No wonder he begged me. Three is a lot better than zero. Lowell George sang Willin', making an impression on me that persists to this day. They had it already on their album but it's a failure. By the time it got to Ann Arbor it was more like what we may enjoy today.

Orig: (not good)

They tried it again on the second album. Getting there. Pretty close. Too fast though.

They finally got it right on the Waiting For Columbus allegedly live album. Wonderful harmony, not much presence, phony applause. Then there was a version on German television which has presence -- a beautiful piano solo as a bonus -- but short on that wonderful harmony. So I thinks to meself, how about putting two and two together to make four?

Little Feat broke up when the keyboard player got tired of so much saloon-style piano and included a fusion number in their set. Lowell George is an earth and water guy. He couldn't stand the fire and air of fusion, not even a small amount, so he quit. Or maybe he was fired for being an obese drug-soaked slob. He regretted the band's agreement on democracy and intended to restart the group with himself solely in charge, but died in early middle age when his unhealthy habits caught up with him.

An extremely interesting topic.

I was a singer songwriter for over a decade and far preferred composing my own pieces as opposed to playing existing records even by artists that I idolised.

‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Bill Withers is an amazing piece of music and you experience the work of a heartfelt wordsmith upon every single revisit.

However Zakk Wylde of BLS fame did a haunting rendition that I would strongly recommend if you haven’t had the privilege.

Zakk is naturally at home with hard rock and metal stonkers but strips all the overdrive and other effects you have come to associate with him as a performer and delivers a haunting stripped back acoustic cover.

Ok this is a stretch.

There was, in my eyes, an iconic song created but in a TV scenario.

The creation was via two catholic priests fitting a former failed Eurovision song B side to their words for a new Eurovision entry.

It counts as it's a song and there is a cover

After they stole a Scandinavian entry from the 1970s to fit the lyrics.

The bass player is the star for me. Loose and solid at the same time. Few can ever do that. Note how prominent in the mix. That hardly ever happens for a bass player. Maybe the trick is to key off of the singer.

Tom Scholz's bass playing is really good. Also Steven Stills and Jimi Hendrix.
