CT Scan to editable Solidworks file?

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on converting CT scan data into an editable format in SolidWorks. The user successfully created a label map using 3D Slicer and exported it as an .STL file, but encountered limitations in editing the model within SolidWorks. It is established that STL files are not inherently editable in SolidWorks, and alternatives such as SolidWorks ScanTo3D and Geomagic are recommended for better results in converting scanned data into editable CAD models.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with 3D Slicer for creating label maps from CT scans
  • Understanding of STL file format and its limitations in CAD software
  • Basic knowledge of SolidWorks interface and functionalities
  • Awareness of CAD conversion tools like SolidWorks ScanTo3D and Geomagic
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to use SolidWorks ScanTo3D for converting STL files
  • Explore Geomagic for importing and editing scanned point clouds
  • Learn about best practices for preparing STL files for CAD software
  • Investigate additional software options for converting 3D scans to editable formats
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, CAD designers, and anyone involved in 3D modeling and design who needs to convert scanned objects into editable formats for further modifications.

Hello,
I have CT scanned an object at my local hospital, and I want to convert the object to an editable part in SolidWorks.

So far, I've used the program 3D Slicer to create a label map of the object and exported it to an .STL format.

However, it doesn't seem to be editable at all when I import the file into SolidWorks. It displays the object, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I want to be able to modify it before I send it to the machine shop.

I've never used SolidWorks before, but from what I've read online here
it doesn't seem that STL is editable once imported into SolidWorks?

3D Slicer doesn't have any way to export to Solidworks format.

How can I turn my STL model into a 3D model that I can modify?

There is a SolidWorks utility that might help you : http://www.solidworks.co.uk/sw/products/3d-cad/scanto3d.htm

Oooh! I think I have that. I'll give it a try.
