CT Scan to editable Solidworks file?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around converting a CT scanned object into an editable format for SolidWorks. Participants explore methods and tools for transforming an STL file into a modifiable 3D model suitable for further design work.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes their process of using 3D Slicer to create a label map and export it as an STL file, noting that the STL format appears non-editable in SolidWorks.
  • Another participant suggests a SolidWorks utility designed to assist with converting scanned data into a usable format.
  • A different participant mentions the existence of additional resources related to STL files and their use in 3D printing.
  • One contributor, who sells CT scanners, expresses that while SolidWorks is a good CAD system, it may not be the best choice for STL to CAD conversions, recommending Geomagic as a preferred platform for such tasks.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best method for converting STL files to editable formats in SolidWorks, with multiple competing views and tools being suggested.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the capabilities of SolidWorks with STL files, as well as the potential need for additional software like Geomagic for effective conversion.

Who May Find This Useful

Hello,
I have CT scanned an object at my local hospital, and I want to convert the object to an editable part in SolidWorks.

So far, I've used the program 3D Slicer to create a label map of the object and exported it to an .STL format.

However, it doesn't seem to be editable at all when I import the file into SolidWorks. It displays the object, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I want to be able to modify it before I send it to the machine shop.

I've never used SolidWorks before, but from what I've read online here
it doesn't seem that STL is editable once imported into SolidWorks?

3D Slicer doesn't have any way to export to Solidworks format.

How can I turn my STL model into a 3D model that I can modify?

There is a SolidWorks utility that might help you : http://www.solidworks.co.uk/sw/products/3d-cad/scanto3d.htm

Oooh! I think I have that. I'll give it a try.
