Direction of reaction of a support

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around understanding the direction of reaction forces in structural mechanics, specifically whether they act to the right or left. Key factors influencing the direction include whether a member is in tension or compression. Participants express confusion about how to determine the reaction direction based on these conditions. Clarification is sought on the specific scenarios that dictate the reaction force's orientation. Understanding these principles is crucial for accurately analyzing forces in structures.

You give little information. Is the short member in tension or compression?

This is my notes. I have no idea. Can you explain when the reaction is acted to the left ? Or when is tge reaction acted to the right? Compreession or tension?

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
