Double slit experiment (geometric maths problem)

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on the geometric interpretation of the double slit experiment, specifically addressing the relationship BP - AP = BD. The user seeks clarification on this equation as presented in the diagram from City Collegiate. The consensus indicates that PA is approximately equal to PD due to the negligible length of AD in comparison to the other segments. This approximation is crucial for understanding the interference pattern in the experiment.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of trigonometry, particularly in relation to geometric figures.
  • Familiarity with the double slit experiment and its significance in physics.
  • Basic knowledge of interference patterns and wave behavior.
  • Ability to interpret diagrams and mathematical relationships in physics contexts.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the mathematical derivation of the double slit experiment equations.
  • Explore the concept of wave interference in more depth.
  • Learn about the role of approximations in physics, particularly in geometric contexts.
  • Review trigonometric identities and their applications in physics problems.
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators explaining wave phenomena, and anyone interested in the mathematical foundations of the double slit experiment.

I understand the experiment and the trigonometry involved except for one statement.

Why is BP-AP=BD in this diagram

How do you know this/ work it out.

Many thanks

PA = PD to a very good approximation as AD is extremely small compared to both.

Thank you
