Efficiently Building a Small Capacitor Bank for a 9V Battery

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the construction of a small capacitor bank intended for use with a 9V battery. Participants explore the efficiency of such a setup, the operational characteristics of capacitor banks, and the suitability of supercapacitors for the intended application.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in building a small capacitor bank for a 9V battery and seeks recommendations for efficient power absorption.
  • Another participant notes that capacitor banks are typically used to absorb power over extended periods and release it quickly, questioning the intent of absorbing power in "as little time as possible."
  • A participant suggests that the initial goal of absorbing and discharging power within a few minutes may not align with the typical use of a capacitor bank.
  • One participant requests additional information regarding the energy involved in the project to provide better guidance.
  • A later reply mentions calculations and expresses frustration about finding better options, while also inquiring if a supercapacitor might be more suitable for the experiment.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best approach for the capacitor bank, and multiple competing views regarding the efficiency and suitability of capacitor banks versus supercapacitors remain unresolved.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks specific details about the energy requirements and operational parameters of the proposed capacitor bank, which may influence the effectiveness of the suggestions made.

I've been interested in building a capacitor bank (a very small one for a simple 9V battery) but I'm not really sure how I should go about doing this. I've researched into other ways and found this would be the most efficient.

I was going to try this the bank absorb as much power as it can in as little time as possible, any recommendations on how I could go about doing this?

Generally the advantage of a capacitor bank is that you can absorb lots of power over a long long time and then release it in a very very short time. Not sure what you are thinking of in terms of 'as little time as possible'.

Hmm, well I'm looking to have it absorb and discharge within a few minutes. So I'm assuming the cap bank isn't the best idea?

You will need to supply more information on how much energy is involved.

I sent you my calculations, it's frustrating trying to solve a problem when you know there is so many better options out there. Thank you for your help, Nova & Berk. I really do appreciate it.

Also, do you think a Super capacitor would be more suitable for my experiment?
