AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges of retaking classes, particularly when faced with the same professor. Participants express frustration over the monotony of revisiting material, especially if the instructor is not engaging. One contributor highlights a silver lining in having missed many classes previously, as it makes the content feel somewhat new upon retaking the course. There is also mention of personal experiences with incomplete grades (INCs) and the impact of withdrawing from classes, indicating a broader issue of academic struggle and the necessity of retaking courses. Overall, the conversation reflects the difficulties and occasional unexpected benefits of repeating classes in an academic setting.

It's mind numbingly boring to sit through it all again, but it helps a lot if the professor is better the second time around. I'm retaking a course now 'cause I never finished up my INC the first time and I'm losing it 'cause it's the same really bad professor it was the first go around. A weird benefit of barely ever going to class the first go around is that the information is kind of new.

I've had to retake far more classes than I want to admit to 'cause of INCs (and I withdrew from one class), so I'm not listing them.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
