Factors affecting heat exchange

AI Thread Summary
Heat transfer is influenced by several key factors, including surface area, temperature differentials, and exposure time. Material properties such as thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat capacity significantly impact heat exchange rates. Additionally, the geometry of the material plays a crucial role in maximizing contact with thermal bodies. For further understanding, the textbook "Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer" by Incropera and DeWitt is recommended as a comprehensive resource. This discussion highlights the importance of both material characteristics and geometric considerations in heat transfer.

Heat transfer is something I've been interested in since studying thermodynamics last semester, although during the course we never really covered anything much to do with what affected heat transfer. I can pretty easily understand that obviously having a higher surface area to exchange across, temperature differentials and the time to which it is exposed will all affect the rate of transfer - but what else is there [if anything]?

Does what the material consists of or the shape of the material [other than to maximise contact with the thermal body] affect it?

Thanks for any insight =)

You can divide the variables into three areas: the material properties, the material geometry, and the driving force (the temperature difference). Sure, the material's thermal conductivity, density, specific heat capacity, and geometry, among others, could all play a part in the results.

is there anything you'd recommend for me to read to find out about all the known factors that affect heat transferance?

and thanks for your reply =)

Take a look at Incropera and DeWitt's Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer. It's a textbook that's clear and useful enough to also serve as a handbook.

Thanks Mapes, i'll look into it!

I was watching a Khan Academy video on entropy called: Reconciling thermodynamic and state definitions of entropy. So in the video it says: Let's say I have a container. And in that container, I have gas particles and they're bouncing around like gas particles tend to do, creating some pressure on the container of a certain volume. And let's say I have n particles. Now, each of these particles could be in x different states. Now, if each of them can be in x different states, how many total...

Let's say we have a cylinder of volume V1 with a frictionless movable piston and some gas trapped inside with pressure P1 and temperature T1. On top of the piston lay some small pebbles that add weight and essentially create the pressure P1. Also the system is inside a reservoir of water that keeps its temperature constant at T1. The system is in equilibrium at V1, P1, T1. Now let's say i put another very small pebble on top of the piston (0,00001kg) and after some seconds the system...
I need to calculate the amount of water condensed from a DX cooling coil per hour given the size of the expansion coil (the total condensing surface area), the incoming air temperature, the amount of air flow from the fan, the BTU capacity of the compressor and the incoming air humidity. There are lots of condenser calculators around but they all need the air flow and incoming and outgoing humidity and then give a total volume of condensed water but I need more than that. The size of the...
