Feynman Lectures: Is It Worth The Money?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the purchase of the Feynman Lectures on Physics for £50 and whether this investment is worthwhile for someone who is new to particle physics. The buyer, a 17-year-old who has just completed AS levels, expresses uncertainty about their ability to understand the material. However, there is a positive sentiment regarding Feynman's ability to explain concepts clearly, especially in contrast to a less effective professor. The consensus suggests that the lectures are a valuable resource for understanding physics, making the purchase a potentially good investment for someone eager to learn.

Okay I've just paid £50 for the feynman lectures on ebay, waiting for it in the post.

Anyone here have it and can tell me whether I've wasted my money (i'm 17 and havn't even started learning particle physics yet, I've just finished AS levels).

Am I going to understand it or not? Also is it any good?

These are things you're supposed to find out before buying a book .

It was a random act of madness while browsing ebay. It's better than spending it on food and drink.

I think of them as a good investment. Feynman, in his recorded and written lectures explained the conceptional aspects of my introductory physics class a lot better than my professor with a thick Russian accent who could rarely understand the questions that were posed to him.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
