Why are Amsterdam's cafes closing down?

AI Thread Summary
In Amsterdam, approximately 300 cafes that sell both soft drugs and alcohol are facing closure due to a government crackdown on this illegal practice, which has been in place for five years. Interestingly, while selling both substances at the same location is prohibited, it remains legal to operate separate establishments for each. This situation has sparked humorous comparisons to fictional settings, such as the Korova milkbar from "A Clockwork Orange," which served drug-laced milk. The discussion also touches on new regulations requiring marijuana users to consume their product outside to avoid exposing others to secondhand smoke, adding to the absurdity of the current drug policy landscape.

This is funny news I heard from over-sees: there are about 300 cafe's (bars) in Amsterdam that sell soft-drugs and alcohol, but that has been illegal for about five years so the government has finally decided to encourage the closure of those locations. I thought: they changed their drug policy?

It is, however, only illegal to sell both at the SAME location, while it is still perfectly legal to have a bar to sell the softdrugs and have a bar next door to sell the alcohol :P weird

I prefer a milk-bar...

"The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence."

isn't that from Clockwork Orange?

If I recall "A Clockwork Orange" properly, the milk was laced with, well the substance/drug of choice of the people in the eighties, sniff-sniff, that's why the 'violent tendancies', a strong stimulant that stuff is.

(stimulates the production of dopamine, if I remember that properly too)

Just ONCE, I wanted to see a post titled Status Update that was not a blatant, annoying spam post by a new member. So here it is. Today was a good day here in Northern Wisconsin. Fall colors are here, no mosquitos, no deer flies, and mild temperature, so my morning run was unusually nice. Only two meetings today, and both went well. The deer that was road killed just down the road two weeks ago is now fully decomposed, so no more smell. Somebody has a spike buck skull for their...
