Differentiate: Essentials of Calc Problem

1. Homework Statement

Differentiate: y=x(lnx)^2-2xlnx+2x.

2. Homework Equations

3. The Attempt at a Solution

(x) ((2lnx)/(x)) + (1)(lnx)^2-(2lnx+2(1/x))+2

2xlnx/x+(lnx)^2-(2lnx+2/x)+2

2lnx+(lnx)^2-2lnx-(2/x)+2

(lnx)^2-(2/x)+2

?^ the answer is just (lnx)^2

You differentiated -2xlnx incorrectly. I'm guessing it was a careless error since you applied the product rule correctly on the first term, just not the second.

There are two things I don't understand about this problem. First, when finding the nth root of a number, there should in theory be n solutions. However, the formula produces n+1 roots. Here is how. The first root is simply ##\left(r\right)^{\left(\frac{1}{n}\right)}##. Then you multiply this first root by n additional expressions given by the formula, as you go through k=0,1,...n-1. So you end up with n+1 roots, which cannot be correct. Let me illustrate what I mean. For this...
