Finding the Best Software for Circuit Simulation & Analysis

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying the best software for circuit simulation and analysis. Participants explore various software options, including SPICE-based packages and alternatives, while considering their specific needs and applications.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants mention that there are several SPICE packages available, with HSPICE being noted as the gold standard, though not as user-friendly as integrated packages like MicroCAP.
  • One participant requests suggestions for software alternatives to SPICE, TINA, and NI, indicating a desire for non-SPICE options.
  • Another participant points out that TINA and the National Instruments package are both SPICE-based, suggesting that most circuit simulation software relies on a SPICE core.
  • One participant mentions using Electronics Workbench as a potential software option.
  • A participant from an Electrical Engineering department states that they primarily use Ansoft/HFSS for simulations and notes the availability of a free student version of Ansoft Designer.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing preferences for software, with some advocating for SPICE-based solutions while others seek alternatives. The discussion does not reach a consensus on the best software, reflecting multiple competing views.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined their specific simulation needs or the types of circuits they wish to analyze, which may influence software recommendations.

Welcome to the PF. There are a number of SPICE packages available. Which one you use depends a bit on what you will use it for. HSPICE is the gold standard, but is not generally as easy to use as the more integrated packages like MicroCAP. Here is a thread where we talked about some different packages:

Pls suggest any other software other than SPICE,Tina and NI

TINA from TI and the National Instruments package are both SPICE-based. Pretty much all circuit simulation software is based on a SPICE core.

What are you trying to do? What kind of circuits do you want to simulate? Why do you not want to use software that is based on SPICE? Do you hate Berkeley or something?

Electronics Workbench

My Electrical Eng. department works almost exclusively with Ansoft/HFSS for simulations.

You can download a free student version of Ansoft designer, Ansoft Designer SV
