AI Thread Summary
To reduce the RPM of an electric generating unit from 15,000 to 250-300 RPM for 50Hz operation, a suitable gearbox is essential. The power requirements are 25KW output and 45 HP input, with considerations for torque and efficiency. A spur gear or low helix angle gearbox is recommended, with AGMA class 9, 10, or 11 depending on budget. If the high input speed poses challenges, using a two-stage gearbox setup may be necessary. Proper selection of coupling between the shaft and generator is also crucial for effective operation.

Hi,

I have a elec generating unit. The shaft has a rpm of 15000. Need to reduce to 250-300rpm i.e. bring it down to generating elec at 50Hz. Could somebody suggest which gearbox is suitable for this application to reduce from high to low rpm. Also suggest which type of coupling has to be used between the shaft and the generator.

Thank you...

15000rpm or 1500rpm?

How big is your generator? Most commercial generators run at 1,500rpm, not sure why you're after 250-300rpm.

The gearbox's reduction is only one requirement that you will need to specify a gearbox for your application. The most important things you haven't mentioned yet is how much power will this gearbox be transmitting, and in a related vein how much torque on the input and output shafts?

Power generated: 25KW
Input power: 45 hp (33.6 kW)
axes: parallel
low speed shaft: 3000rpm
high speed shaft: 15,700 rpm
center distance: 3.125-inches (79.375 mm)
spur gear or low helix angle (whichever is more efficient, less expensive and low noise) ?
AGMA class 9, 10 or 11 (depending on cost)
life: 60,000 hrs

Take a look at GlobalSpec.com's Gearboxes and Gearheads search. They have a lot of different stuff in there, and you can narrow your search one parameter at a time (for example, reduction and power throughput). It sounds like you could have some trouble based on the input shaft speed (15000 rpm) but who knows you might find something...

If the input shaft speed does become a problem, you might consider stacking a pair of gearboxes, one reducing from 15000 rpm to around 3000, and then another gearbox that reduces to your final shaft speed.

How did you find PF?: Via Google search Hi, I have a vessel I 3D printed to investigate single bubble rise. The vessel has a 4 mm gap separated by acrylic panels. This is essentially my viewing chamber where I can record the bubble motion. The vessel is open to atmosphere. The bubble generation mechanism is composed of a syringe pump and glass capillary tube (Internal Diameter of 0.45 mm). I connect a 1/4” air line hose from the syringe to the capillary The bubble is formed at the tip...
Thread 'Calculate minimum RPM to self-balance a CMG on two legs'
Here is a photo of a rough drawing of my apparatus that I have built many times and works. I would like to have a formula to give me the RPM necessary for the gyroscope to balance itself on the two legs (screws). I asked Claude to give me a formula and it gave me the following: Let me calculate the required RPM foreffective stabilization. I'll use the principles of gyroscopicprecession and the moment of inertia. First, let's calculate the keyparameters: 1. Moment of inertia of...
Thread 'Physics of Stretch: What pressure does a band apply on a cylinder?'
Scenario 1 (figure 1) A continuous loop of elastic material is stretched around two metal bars. The top bar is attached to a load cell that reads force. The lower bar can be moved downwards to stretch the elastic material. The lower bar is moved downwards until the two bars are 1190mm apart, stretching the elastic material. The bars are 5mm thick, so the total internal loop length is 1200mm (1190mm + 5mm + 5mm). At this level of stretch, the load cell reads 45N tensile force. Key numbers...
