GRE Math Sub for Physics PhD program

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on whether a rising junior majoring in physics and math should take the GRE Math Subject Test in addition to the GRE Physics Test when applying to top physics PhD programs. The consensus suggests that while the Physics Test is essential, the value of taking the Math Test is uncertain and may not significantly impact admissions decisions. There is an emphasis on the unpredictability of admissions committee preferences, indicating that taking both tests may not be necessary or beneficial.

I am a rising junior in a US college and I plan to apply to a top physics PhD program. I am both a physics and a math major, and I am more interested in theoretic physics rather than experimental. So should I also take the GRE Math Subject Test?

I know. But will it do any good if I take both?

This falls into the category of "reading the minds of the admissions committee". Who knows what they will think?

I can tell you that I personally would not give this much weight.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
