AI Thread Summary
The ground velocity of the plane is measured at 269.6 km/h [N 5.6 E], indicating its speed relative to the ground. There is a discussion about whether this should be framed as the ground's velocity relative to the plane, suggesting a negative value. However, "ground velocity" typically refers to the object's speed concerning the ground, which is crucial for pilots navigating to their destinations. The distinction emphasizes the importance of understanding velocity in navigation contexts. Accurate terminology is essential for effective communication in aviation.

Homework Statement
In the homework questions, it says to "determine the ground velocity of this plane". Would that not be the velocity of the ground in respect to the plane? Why would it be the velocity of the plane in respect to the ground?
Relevant Equations
An aeroplane is travelling with an air velocity of 250km/h and heads due North. The air velocity relative to the ground is 32 km/h [35 N of E]. Determine the ground velocity of this plane.
The velocity of the plane relative to the ground is 269.6 km/h [N 5.6 E]. Shouldn't it be the velocity of the ground relative to the plane is - 269.6 km/h [N 5.6 E]

Generally "ground velocity" of something means the velocity of that something with respect to the ground. (That's what the pilot is most interested in if he wants to get where he wants to go!)

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
