In summary, the conversation revolved around an experiment mentioned in Carl Sagan's book "Demon Haunted World," where a computer controlled digital readout was placed in a high location in an emergency room to test if individuals having an "out of body" experience would be able to correctly report the random words displayed on the screen. The speaker mentions that they have not found any information on the results of this experiment, but someone else shares a link to a similar test that has been conducted.

I read his book "Demon Haunted World" many years ago. I recall that he referred to an experiment where a computer controlled digital readout was placed in a high location not visible to people in an emergency room of some hospital. This display showed computer controlled random words to test whether anyone having an "out of body" near death experience and floating above their body would see and correctly report what the display was showing. Surely, over the intervening years, there must have been some positive or negative data from this experiment, but I have not been able to find any information about it.

Does anyone here know anything about it?

1. What is Carl Sagan's out of body test?

Carl Sagan's out of body test is an experiment he proposed in his book "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark" to test the validity of claims of out of body experiences.

2. How does the out of body test work?

The out of body test involves placing a hidden message or symbol in a specific location that can only be seen from an out of body perspective. The individual claiming to have an out of body experience would then need to accurately report the hidden message or symbol upon their return to their physical body.

3. Has the out of body test been conducted?

There have been several attempts to conduct the out of body test, but no reliable evidence has been found to support the existence of out of body experiences. Many individuals who claimed to have successfully completed the test were unable to provide accurate details or descriptions of the hidden message or symbol.

4. Are there any criticisms of the out of body test?

Some critics argue that the out of body test is not a foolproof method for testing the existence of out of body experiences. They argue that the lack of successful results could be due to factors such as the difficulty of controlling the out of body state and the possibility of false memories.

5. What does the out of body test suggest about the nature of out of body experiences?

The out of body test suggests that out of body experiences may be a result of psychological phenomena rather than an actual separation of the mind from the physical body. It also highlights the need for scientific inquiry and evidence-based approaches in understanding these experiences.
