AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the search for background reading materials related to the history of physics, prompted by a user’s perception of a disorganized undergraduate syllabus in Physics. Two notable recommendations are highlighted: "The Evolution of Physics" by Albert Einstein and Leopold Infeld, which provides a non-mathematical overview from classical to quantum physics, and "An Introduction to the Meaning and Structure of Physics" by Leon N Cooper, which offers a conceptual and historical perspective on the subject. Both books are praised for their readability and depth, making them suitable for general readers interested in the evolution of physics. Links to purchase and access the books online are provided.

I have the following two books regarding this topic. So I mention them here:

1

"The Evolution of Physics" by Albert Einstein and Leopold Infeld

This is a non-mathematical book for general readers. It gives an overall sketch from classical to quantum physics (including relativity).

Very readable. Worth taking a look.

You can read (and download) the book online too.

Another wonderful book is "An Introduction to the Meaning and Structure of Physics" by noble laureate Leon N Cooper

This is a conceptual overview of physics with historical approach.

A brilliant book.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
