How Do Tangential and Normal Forces Affect Planetary Velocity?

AI Thread Summary
Tangential forces affect a planet's velocity by changing its speed, as they are directly proportional to the velocity. In contrast, normal forces do not alter the speed but instead change the direction of the planet's motion. This relationship aligns with Kepler's second law, which states that a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times, highlighting the balance between speed and orbital path. Understanding these forces is crucial for grasping planetary motion dynamics. The discussion emphasizes the distinct roles of tangential and normal forces in influencing planetary velocity.

Kepler's law questions

Homework Statement

What effect will the tangential component of force have on the velocity of the planet?
What effect will the normal component of force have on the velocity of the planet?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I think that the tangential force change the value of the velocity, and they are in proportional relationship
The normal force change the direction of the planet.
I'm right about these? If not, can you explain the right answers? thank you very much

If memory serves me, Kepler's second law is equal time = equal area

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
