Schools How helpful is honors in math grad school admissions?

AI Thread Summary
Graduating with honors can significantly enhance an application to a math PhD program, as it often reflects strong academic performance and dedication. Advisors generally value students who excel in honors courses, as this can lead to positive recommendations. The discussion highlights the dilemma of choosing between advanced sequences in algebra, analysis, and topology, with a focus on the necessity of algebra and analysis for honors graduation. While a passion for topology is acknowledged, the consensus leans towards prioritizing algebra and analysis to strengthen the overall application and secure favorable endorsements from faculty. Ultimately, the decision should balance personal interests with strategic academic choices to maximize opportunities for graduate studies.

How helpful is it to graduate with honors when applying to a math PhD program? I have room for two advanced sequences next year out of algebra, analysis, and topology. I really, really want to study topology, but the requirement to graduate with honors is algebra and analysis.

If it's going to make a big difference, I'll just do that and wait till grad school for topology.

we tend to believe advisors who say that their student has the ability to do mathematics. if performance in an honors course adds one teacher who will say, it helps.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
