AI Thread Summary
VY Canis Majoris is believed to be in the final stages of its life, having expanded significantly as it nears death. Its massive size may be a result of this process rather than its original state. Observers question whether we will witness the star's final events, as its demise could take millions of years or may have already occurred without our knowledge. The uncertainty surrounding its life cycle highlights the challenges in studying distant celestial bodies. Ultimately, the fate of VY Canis Majoris remains a topic of speculation and intrigue in astrophysics.

I read somewhere that the star is in its last stages of life, so is it true, that in its death throes, it ballooned up to the massive size? Or was it always that huge? Will we see the last events of the stars life, or will this take millions of years for it to finally burn out?

Nobody knows.

Millions of years, or maybe 2012. It is too distant to matter.

It may have already died, we just have not seen it yet.

Publication: Redox-driven mineral and organic associations in Jezero Crater, Mars Article: NASA Says Mars Rover Discovered Potential Biosignature Last Year Press conference The ~100 authors don't find a good way this could have formed without life, but also can't rule it out. Now that they have shared their findings with the larger community someone else might find an explanation - or maybe it was actually made by life.
TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation.
