    Love Major
AI Thread Summary
A math degree significantly differs from introductory calculus, focusing more on analysis and theoretical concepts. To determine if a math major is suitable, taking an introductory proofs class is recommended, as it helps gauge interest in higher-level mathematics. Not all universities offer a specific "intro to proofs" course, so it's essential to consult the math department for available options. Other courses like Linear Algebra or Introduction to Number Theory can also provide insights into proof techniques and prepare students for advanced mathematics.

First of all, I love math, but i am only in calculus 1. and i hear that a math degree isn't really like calculus, once you get into the analysis and theory of math it can be very different, at least that's what i hear.

how can i figure out if a math major is for me, or if engineering is a better route.

thanks

Easy take an intro to proofs class. If you like it then math is for you.

It's also worth mentioning that not all schools have a course titled "intro to proofs" or some variant of it. Ask the math department to make sure. Courses such as Linear Algebra or an Introduction to Number Theory that can serve as gateways to upper division mathematics and proof techniques. It will depend on the university you're attending.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
