AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the impact and perception of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) videos, with participants expressing a mix of appreciation and skepticism. Some users find ASMR comforting and beneficial for relaxation and sleep, while others question its value, suggesting it may be a waste of time or likening it to a form of entertainment akin to "new type of porn." There are mentions of personal experiences with ASMR, including the absence of the "tingles" that many seek, and discussions about the psychological effects of ASMR, including its potential connections to human behavior and sexuality. The conversation also touches on the frequency of new ASMR content and the community's varied reactions, from enjoyment to confusion about its purpose. Overall, the thread reflects a blend of curiosity, humor, and personal anecdotes regarding the ASMR phenomenon.

I've come to the conclusion that you produce something or your a fraud. So get busy.

And your production is: ...posts on PF? The only thing I can claim to produce is flatulence. Literally and metaphorically.

You should check out RelaxingASMR's channel. He's my favorite; I learn something new almost every new video.

Here's one of his latest videos:

I need to take a break from ASMR videos because I'm not getting brain tingles anymore. This happens every so often and I have to stop watching them for a couple weeks. It's been really difficult to fall asleep. :frown:

I don't even get the tingles an I love them. Man, that would be a bonus.

Aren't you a little old to be wasting time with these? You claim to have refereed peer-reviewed articles, so you must at least have gone to grad school putting you in your mid-20's at the least.

If you claim you're lonely, why do you waste time all day watching videos? Or maybe this is just some joke which I don't get (and probably don't want to).

Looks interesting to me, I'll give such a video a try. It's like meditation, but then different?

Lol. I can't even get it together to take the GRE. Some genius.

And ASMR videos are NOT a waste of time, are you kidding?

Edit: have you ever watched one, Dipole?

I suggest watching one of the role play ones, like the cranial exam or something like that. I don't get the tingles or whatever else it is that ASMR is supposed to engage, I just love that that someone is trying to get me tingling, and they're doing it 20 times a day, life is good

And I don't claim to referee peer-reviewed articles, I do it for free, I should get paid. And yes, I'm too old for a lot of things.

I'm not joking when I said its the best humanity has to offer. I challenge anybody to prove me wrong.

I watched an hour of ASMR once and it felt pretty good (brain felt weird). I stopped after I realized I wasn't getting the same buzz the second time around and I needed to watch more ASMR. I think the reason is because my brain was getting used to the excessive amounts of dopamine. Honestly, I wasn't being productive either. It was almost like I was setting on fire the remaining time I have to live.

Yeah, new and interesting. So me be scientifically curious, I investigated and got a tingle with Ms. Spa but it wasn't in the brain:

Edit:

I'm sorry guys. I'm afraid I made a mistake, and this being a science forum and all. My apologies. Please let me correct myself: My tingle was in the brain.

Edit #2:

One last comment for the historical record before I go and was one of the first thoughts that came to my mind after seeing AMSR for the first time yesterday:

. . . where are you Freud.

I don't think it's dopamine so much as oxytocin. Although dopamine's going to be involved somehow. This girl puts up a new video everyday and explains, god love her.

Laziness prevented me from watching it XD

But I did check some other videos out. Some of them are kinda weird, but some of them I find very relaxing, although no tingling.

They remind me of one substitute teacher I had in elementary school. Whenever she came over to explain something on the paper, I would watch her hand draw out the letters, and I always found it relaxing. Funny how I just realized that I'm not the only one.

I don't get 'tingles' but it does feel like my sinuses have a slight resonance. Kind of feel it in my jaw too if I relax it.

May I suggest a girlfriend?

You can get all the relaxation of an ASMR video, and then some

Although, sometimes the "relaxation" bit turns into frustration, but hey, give it shot.

I've never claimed to have refereed peer-reviewed articles, nor have I claimed to be lonely.

I watch these videos at night while I'm trying to fall asleep, thus am not too concerned about being productive.

Basically a new type of porn. Oh, I realize puritians reading this might complain of that characterization, but that is my appraisal of the matter. But what though I wonder is the psyco-analytic basis for ASMR's effect on people. What I wonder is what would Freud have thought? You know, Sigmund Freud, "Passions of the Mind" and all? Some like him, some don't. Smoked too many cigars but I digress. In particular I wonder what is the Freudian sexual component of this affair as it relates to females and their role as sex objects in Nature and society. But also just as importantly, is what Freud called the "talking thearpy". Why that works? The talking I mean, and apparently from what I've seen in the ASMR videos, how you talk matters. "Yeah, uh-hu". Those were really a buzz or what, "triggers" for me in the video I referenced above.

I suspect I already know maybe. He'd think, "some things have changed but some components of human behavior, sexuality, a desire to connect, and that marvelous gift of "talking", haven't.

Yeah, my first thought was "wtf, this is like a really weird porn". But some of them are less sexual than others.

I've skimmed a lot of them, and I still have no clue what they actually are . However, I used one video to try and relax to sleep (it takes me a long time to be able to relax when going to bed), and it seems to have helped somewhat.

I'm not a fan of the whispering ones.
