What is happening within an iron bar/iron core when it is wrapped by a solenoid with current running through the solenoid? Do electrons within the bar get displaced?

One of the things that will happen is that iron atoms will orient so that their magnetic moments are more parallel to outer magnetic field (from the solenoid). also orientation of electrons spin changes.
