Is Disabling Explorer a Safe Fix for Computer Performance Issues?

AI Thread Summary
The computer experiences significant slowdowns, particularly when online, requiring a lengthy wait before functionality resumes. A workaround involves terminating the explorer process using ctrl-alt-del, which removes the desktop but allows applications like Internet Explorer to run smoothly. While this method improves performance, it raises concerns about potential underlying issues. The suggestion to run a virus scan is critical, as the symptoms may indicate a trojan infection. A command prompt check using "netstat" can reveal excessive network connections, further indicating a possible trojan presence.

This computer my boss gave me seems to get bogged down too easily. especially when I get online. I have to wait for about 5 minutes after connecting before I can do anything. But what I did last time I connected was hit ctrl-alt-del then stop the explorer process. This wiped out my desktop, then I started a new application and started iexplorer. Now it's running like a charm. I don't have a desktop, but everything seems to work fine. Is there any reason why I shouldn't be running the computer in this fashion, other than lack of convienience?

Sounds like a virus (trojan, actually) - run a scan and make sure the scanner is up to date. A quick way to check is to open a command prompt and type "netstat" - if you get more than a small handful of connections, its a trojan.

Sorry if 'Profile Badge' is not the correct term. I have an MS 365 subscription and I've noticed on my Word documents the small circle with my initials in it is sometimes different in colour document to document (it's the circle at the top right of the doc, that, when you hover over it it tells you you're signed in; if you click on it you get a bit more info). Last night I had four docs with a red circle, one with blue. When I closed the blue and opened it again it was red. Today I have 3...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
