AI Thread Summary
Living in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, is perceived as an exciting prospect compared to Canada, with discussions highlighting the region's beauty, cleanliness, and cultural diversity. Participants note that each European country has its unique culture and language, making it difficult to generalize about the continent as a whole. The Netherlands is praised for its liberal atmosphere, while Belgium is described as complex yet familiar to Canadians due to its linguistic diversity. Travel across Schengen countries is unrestricted, allowing for easy exploration of various cultures and historic sites. Norway is also mentioned as a beautiful destination, with similarities to Canada in climate but noted for its higher cost of living. Language skills are emphasized as important for navigating different regions, as English is not universally spoken outside tourist areas. Overall, the conversation reflects a strong interest in the cultural richness and travel opportunities that Europe offers.

Hello. Currently I live in Canada but I want to move to Europe. My family lives in Netherlands and it is really a beautiful country. Would it be fun to live there? How different is it from Canada?

Yeah, Europe is very fun to live in! You should come live in Belgium, you'll have more fun then you'll ever imagine!

Yes.

I'm from Holland but now live in Toronto. You'll like living there, its a very liberal country.

Also most girls are tall, blonde, blue-eyed and pretty. You can't go wrong

I think European girls are gorgeous.
Perhaps, the title of this thread is vague but really I don't know how else to phrase it! I mean, Europe just seems so much cleaner, so diverse etc. It seems like a fun place to live in, without delving into any substantial comparisons between Canada and european countries.

Actually funny you should mention Norway. My friend actually studies in Norway at United World College and he says it's really beautiful there! In a way, it is bit like Canada in terms of climate. Am I right?

Yes and no. Norway climate is much more expensive :-p

Belgium is the most complex country in the world. We have 10^{56} governments and an equal number of prime ministers. But I guess it should be familiar with Canadeans, with Quebec and all...

Can you travel all across Europe without restrictions?

Yes, you can freely travel to all the so-called Shengen-countries. This includes many European countries, but not the UK, Switzerland and Norway...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area - Norway is mostly in, only Svalbard seems to be outside. Switzerland is in since 2008. Last summer we made a loop around Baltic - through Lativa, Lotva, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Norway - no border problems.

Hmm..Queen Maud Land isn't in Schengen, either..

Of course it is. It is the beautifullest place on Earth. :approve:

Canada is a bit like Norway, not the other way around.

I agree!
I'm from the Netherlands myself, but if you're only coming to steal our girls - stay away!
I like it as it is!

You can't talk of Europe like you talk of USA. Each european country has its own culture and language, so I can't tell you if it's fun to live in Europe.

What's fun in Europe though is that you can visit different countries very easily, and if you like history, there are many historic places you can visit in every country.

I'm not sure the Appalachian and the Bostonian would have much in common.
Not even the language..

Of course it's fun to live in Europe - each country has its own culture and language!
And in most countries people even speak English!

As you’ve seen, the grass is always greener on this side!

I’m sure we got anything you need, whether you like the laidback countryside:

Or the fancy city:

I have to agree with arildno though – Norway is a gem. Don’t miss the fjords for god’s sake!

Why not buy a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurail" pass and see it all?

Then when you think you’ve seen it all – you’re welcome to celebrate a Swedish Midsummer (unforgettable):

Actually I got interested in Europe because of this Polish girl I'm friends with. She praises Europe so much and loves Poland. That sounded pretty good so I thought why not move to europe? Netherlands is particularly of interest because my family lives there but really I would be happy with say, Poland or Belgium or Norway etc.
On a side note, her favorite singer is Doda. I looked her up and she seems just like american pop singers.

My ancestors were from Europe. They were glad to get out alive.

You should be very careful when visiting a barber in Poland... some people come out with GREEN HAIR!

()

You will find much 'American stuff' in Europe.

Doda is not the best example of Polish music. If anything, she is a good example of a pop celebrity with a lot of noise around her, many similar singers around the world. At the same time she IS popular here.

Yes, Norway is an apple of my eye :)

  • #27
Yes it is. However, it is expensive relative to the Canadian and US dollar (Euro=1.44 US today).

It pays to know a few European languages unless you stick to tourist areas. English (and French) are very useful, but you'll find neither is commonly spoken in many parts of Europe. English works very well in the Nordic countries (including Finland), the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and of course the UK and Ireland. French works well in France (if you are really fluent), French Belgium (including Brussels) and the French speaking part of Switzerland (Geneva). Beyond that German is useful in other parts of Switzerland. Austria and much of Eastern Europe (Don't speak Russian there without permission). In Southern Europe, you'll find much of the population is monolingual (Spain, Italy Greece) unless you're in tourist areas where English is usually the preferred non local language.
